VOAD logoFaith-based and other organizations are being asked to consider becoming part of a new “Adopt-A-Shelter” program in Brevard County designed to increase volunteer staffing for emergency shelters in the event of an evacuation.
Partnering in the program are Brevard County Emergency Management, Brevard VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) and the local chapter of the American Red Cross. (Read brochure here.)

  • South Brevard, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 26, at Salvation Army-South, 1080 Hickory St., Melbourne.
  • Central Brevard, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Red Cross, 1700 Cedar St., Rockledge.
  • North Brevard, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 10, at Salvation Army-North/Central, 1218 W. Main St., Titusville.

“This is a critical need and we are turning to faith-based organizations to consider stepping up to help,” said David Rosenbaum, VOAD chairman and pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church on Merritt Island. “Think of the camaraderie built if eight or 10 of your members could say, ’This is our shelter.’
“Of course, volunteers in any number are welcome.”
